MAP STORIES · CAPITAL ACCESS

Why the capital is not a small detail.

When people ask for new provinces, they are often also asking a practical question: where would the offices be, and who would have to travel farther or less far?

Published 18 September 2026 · Subay Pakistan · Example using proposal capitals

These models discuss administrative access, not identity. People remain Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashtun, Baloch or part of their own community identity regardless of how a proposal groups districts.

Start with one district

Take Gujranwala. Under the current structure, its provincial capital is Lahore. In the 12-province model, Gujranwala is still grouped in a Northeastern Punjab unit whose suggested capital is Lahore. But in the 18, 24 and 36 models, Gujranwala itself becomes the suggested capital of that grouping.

This does not prove that one model is better. It shows the kind of change people can inspect: the same district may move from being a place served by a distant capital to being the proposed capital of its own unit.

Southern Punjab shows another pattern

Multan is suggested as the capital of Southern Punjab in the 12-province model. In the 18-province model, the southern grouping splits: Multan leads a South-Central Punjab unit, while Bahawalpur leads a Southern Punjab unit. In the 36-province model, Dera Ghazi Khan also becomes the suggested capital of a separate Southwestern Punjab unit.

Access is more than distance

A capital-distance comparison is useful because it turns a political map into an everyday question. But road distance is only one part of access. Travel time, public transport, mountain or river crossings, court and hospital networks, digital services and administrative capacity all matter.

That is why the website separates the idea of a proposed capital from any claim that it is automatically the best capital. A better version of this debate would compare road routes, service locations, population served and transition costs side by side.

قریب ہونا اہم ہے، مگر کافی نہیں۔

Being closer matters, but it is not the whole answer.

Use the map as a question-maker

The best use of Subay Pakistan is not to treat any map as final. It is to ask more precise questions: if this district moved into this proposed unit, who would its neighbours be? Where would the capital be? How many people would that unit serve? Which communities might feel better represented, and which might disagree?

Open Capital access or follow Gujranwala through every model.
